One of the definitions of “Bondi” or “Boondi” is that it’s an onomatopoeic Aboriginal word, meaning noise of water breaking over rocks.
Before colonisation, the world famous beach was the land of its traditional owners, the Cadigal and Biddigal people. There is evidence of Aboriginal rock carvings from 3000-4000 BC of fishes on the cliffs, and it’s believed that the beach was used as a large-scale flint tool making place, using chipped and mined volcanic rock from the area.
A bird’s eye view in present day sees the little golden crescent of Bondi Beach as a colourful and crowded place to soak up some sun.
